How to Pick a Moisturizer That Matches Your Needs

Finding the best moisturizer is all about matching your skin's needs with the right ingredients. Dry skin that feels tight, rough or itchy may benefit from a thick formulation such as CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. It combines a humectant (hyaluronic acid) with an occlusive (petroleum) to help add moisture and lock it in.

For acne-prone skin, look for lighter, oil-free gels or lotions formulated with noncomedogenic ingredients. Aveeno Positively Radiant Clear Complexion Moisturizer contains salicylic acid and soy extract to help clear blemishes while leaving your skin soft and smooth.

Both of these dermatologist-recommended formulations are gentle on sensitive skin that requires extra care. When shopping online at CVS, you can filter your search by skin type or key ingredient to find the best moisturizer match.

Can Lotion Expire? Here's What to Know

A bottle of lotion can serve you well for a while, but moisturizer eventually expires. With time, the ingredients and preservatives break down and become less effective. Check your product's packaging for a printed expiration date or period after opening symbol. This symbol looks like an open cosmetics jar and indicates expiration in terms of months, usually 6M, 12M or 24M.

As a general guideline, unopened moisturizers and lotions are good for 2-3 years if stored in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. But once opened, they typically last only 6-12 months, depending on the formulation. Some people write the date they opened their lotion on the container to help keep track. If you notice a change in your lotion's color, consistency, smell or effectiveness, it's time to toss it. Eye creams typically have the shortest shelf life and should be replaced every few months.
