Camouflage Uneven Skin and Blemishes With Concealer Makeup

Neutralize red spots or hide acne with concealer makeup for your unique skin tone and type. Explore concealers and color correctors from trusted brands, including Almay and CoverGirl, at CVS.

What Is Concealer Used For?

Brighten tired eyes, transform uneven skin or hide imperfections with concealer makeup. Concealer is often applied under the eyes or on blemishes. You can also put concealer on the jaw, nose or below the cheekbones.

Here are some common uses for concealer:

  • Eyebrow definition

  • Skin definition or illumination

  • Eye shadow primer

Mask blemishes, such as pimples, blackheads and whiteheads, with concealer makeup. Concealer hides imperfections, creating the look of radiant, acne-free skin. You can also create balance and symmetry with the right concealer for your complexion.

How to Apply Concealer

Concealer generally works best on clean, moisturized skin. Wash and hydrate your face with your usual skin care products before applying concealer makeup. Make sure your skin is dry before adding concealer. If you're using primer, add that before applying a concealing product.

Warming concealer on the back of your hand can help ensure even coverage. Concealing creams are usually buildable products, so dab yours on in layers, blending each carefully before adding more.

Apply foundation evenly, and wait a few minutes before adding concealer. Focus on blemishes, dark circles and uneven skin. Dab concealer gently on these areas, and blend with a damp sponge or brush. You can also use your finger, but wash your hands first to help prevent the spread of bacteria. Set your concealer with a facial powder or setting spray.

Concealer vs. Foundation

Concealer and foundation pair well, but you can also use these products separately. Foundation is generally used for full-face coverage, while concealer is ideal for targeted camouflage of discolored patches or blemishes. Apply foundation first if you plan to use the products together, and dab on concealer.

Foundation creates a base for layering other makeup, such as blush or bronzer. Different coverage types are available, including sheer, medium and full. Concealer generally offers thick, highly pigmented coverage. You usually can't replace foundation with concealer if you want full-face coverage, as your face may look cakey.
