Yeast Infection Pills

A yeast infection is a condition that occurs with an overgrowth of the fungus Candida, most commonly by Candida albicans. These infections typically affect the vagina, but they can appear in other parts of the body. Yeast infection pills help to treat and alleviate the symptoms associated with a yeast infection. Common symptoms of vaginal yeast infections include vaginal itching, soreness, inflammation around the vagina, pain during sex, and white or gray clumpy discharge. Yeast infection pills are often available as an over-the-counter (OTC) medication or with a prescription from your doctor. Growing research has shown that taking probiotic supplements, especially those with Lactobacillus, may help to reduce the symptoms of yeast infections by restoring the healthy vaginal flora.

Types of Yeast Infection Pills

Yeast infection pills typically come as a one-dose, three-dose, seven-dose, or daily-dose medication. Diflucan (fluconazole) is a common one-dose oral medication designed to treat fungal infections.

CVS has a range of homeopathic and probiotic pills that can help to alleviate symptoms associated with yeast infections as well as help prevent them from occurring in the first place. For example, YeastGard Advanced is made with a probiotic formula to provide homeopathic relief for yeast infection symptoms. VH essentials® includes probiotics and prebiotics as well as cranberry for feminine tract support.

When To Take Yeast Infection Pills

If you've never had a yeast infection before, speak with your doctor to determine the best treatment option for you. If a prescription yeast infection pill is recommended, make sure to follow the directions, as the pills may come in a single-dose or a multi-dose prescription. Probiotic-based supplements will typically take a few weeks to help treat symptoms. Read the package label for specifics on how frequently you'll need to take your probiotic supplement.

Make sure to speak with your doctor if symptoms do not resolve after you finish your course of treatment, if the infection returns within a couple of months, or if you experience several yeast infections within a year.

How To Take Yeast Infection Pills

Always make sure you read the instructions to determine the right dosage and how to take your yeast infection pill. Most pills are taken orally. Pills and supplements may or may not require that you take them with water or food. For prescription and over-the-counter yeast infection pills, it is important that you always complete the treatment protocol, even if your symptoms have cleared before you've finished your medication.
