FSA-Eligible Melatonin: Natural Sleep Aid

Combat occasional sleeplessness with FSA-eligible melatonin. When it gets dark, your brain automatically produces the hormone melatonin that helps you sleep by assisting the body with its circadian rhythm — its internal clock. But exposure to light during the hours you should be asleep can disrupt the production of melatonin, resulting in sleeplessness and occasional insomnia. FSA-eligible melatonin supplements can have the same effect as the naturally occurring melatonin that your body isn’t properly producing, so you may fall asleep faster. Your FSA plan may cover the cost of this herbal sleep aid.

Does FSA Cover Melatonin?

Because melatonin products are for dual-purpose use, they're not automatically FSA-eligible under the CARES Act. Dual-purpose products are those that aren’t necessarily considered to have a medical use but may provide medical benefits. For this reason, to be covered by your FSA for melatonin supplements, you must have your health care provider fill out a Letter of Medical Necessity stating that the supplement is necessary for your particular health care concern. Speak with your HR representative or insurance agent to learn more about how to obtain FSA-approved melatonin via an LMN.

Products containing melatonin and antacid remedies may be FSA-eligible. Check your FSA plan details to learn if formulas such as Tums Heartburn + Sleep Support or Pepto PM — both of which contain melatonin — may be FSA-eligible melatonin options for you.

Is Melatonin FSA-Approved?

Although most non-herbal sleep aids such as Tylenol PM or Unisom are FSA-eligible, melatonin is not automatically covered by an FSA. See your HR representative or ask your insurance company for a form for your doctor to complete, certifying that melatonin is necessary for your medical needs. This is the only current way to obtain FSA-eligible melatonin.

Are Melatonin Gummies FSA-Eligible?

No form of melatonin — whether gummies, tablets, capsules or liquid — currently has FSA eligibility without a doctor’s certification. FSA-approved melatonin in gummy format is only attainable if your doctor deems it a medical necessity. Having your doctor or a practitioner at the Minute Clinic complete the LMN form to certify that you need the melatonin gummies or other formulations of melatonin for a medical need is the only route to getting this type of sleep aid under FSA rules. Your doctor can also suggest the best FSA melatonin for you.

CVS is happy to help you understand your FSA benefits and guide you through the process of obtaining FSA-eligible melatonin. Speak with your insurer and your doctor to get started on certification of medical necessity to reduce your out-of-pocket costs for this popular sleep aid.
